I spend a wonderful music and art related holiday in Robe, which is on the South Australia coast near the Coorong. It is an artistic paradise of wild water, exquisite rock pools filled with marine life, salt lakes and pristine wilderness and a beautiful harbour and quaint seaside town with traditional country pub hospitality. That is where I stayed, in the country pub, enjoying the counter teas of local crayfish and enjoying the evening entertainment music. After a big day out hiking, photographing and painting it is great to relax in the evening and listen to a band playing music.
We hired a 4WD bus to get us into some remote locations to and saw aspects of Robe that aren't accessed from standard 2WD vehicles.
Some of the beaches were in pristine condition, some rocky and rugged, and then there was—quite unexpectedly we stumbled across it fully dressed, with our painting equipment, the nudists beach. You recon we did not get some glares when we set up our easels. Well I painted the sea and sand. I wouldn't paint people without their permission.
Robe is on the South East Limestone Coast of South Australia. The town's distinctive combination of historical buildings, ocean, and fishing. Features include Lake Fellmongery, Old Gaol, Customs House, Robe, Chinese Monument, Cape Dombey Obelisk
I recall the colours in a rock pool, exquisite jade green, and the see on a still day, so jewel like, magical.
We stool atop cliffs looking down into rock pools and painted.
Many of the outbuildings along the South Australian coastline were built of sandstone. Many have since been sandblasted away by the winds off the ocean. Disappearing houses. Some of the ruins were visible when i was there. I painted them. Many have been restored and new buildings are still constructed in the locally obtained sandstone.
Below is the small harour of Robe.
And headed back to the seaside town pub for the crayfish dinner and music-fest of entertainment and a glass of wine or beer at the end of an exhausting but satisfying creative sightseeing day.
