Yet another detox diet was released today.
Yet another friend who has been going to the same, 'I am on a diet club,' for the past four years had a bender over the weekend and another batch of fitness extremists came away with an extreme injury. I cannot 'preach,' it was rainy weather, I am obsessed with my novel writing, editing and research and overate and under exercised. I even had the strong impulse to get out the scales and weigh myself. I was proud of myself...I overcame the urge. The bathroom scales do not make me healthy, they make me obsessed with my weight. Every moment is a new beginning in focusing on caring for yourself - by following a lifestyle that is right for each of us - not by following another crackpot diet or detox nor an injury laden exercise program.
Say STOP! Don't buy into the marketing programs that sell us self-abuse.
Eating and moving healthy has nothing to do with the bathroom scales, it is about caring for me enough to look after my body's heath. My actual weight has not a single thing of any relevance to do with that. Healthy eating (which allows us to find our correct weight) is not about dieting to a weight and then taking off the breaks (and then inevitably yo-yoing the weight back on,)
What is detox?
The detox concept involves fasting or following a limited diet in order to cleanse the body of contaminants found in everyday foods. Those foods the detox programs say we are detoxing from are processed heavily refined foods, flavour enhancers and artificial colourings.
I would ask, why do we need to detox from them, wouldn’t it be better to strive to cut these products out of our diet, most of the time so the rare occasion when we (with full permission from ourselves and enjoyment, not guilt) eat them, they do not do us any major harm?
Harsh fasts and cleanses such as the Lemon Detox Diet, the Fruit Flush and the Master Cleanse have given detoxing a bad name with nutritionists for being too strict and putting the body under unnecessary stress.
And the truth is that the body naturally detoxifies itself. Internal detox is an everyday reality by hard-working organs such as your liver, lungs, skin and bowel. We are detoxing all the time, we just don’t realise it.
The illogical situation is if you go on a detox program, you are in effect beating yourself up….punishing yourself by depriving yourself of that occasional glass of wine, slice of bread, cup of coffee or tasting a chip of a friend’s plate.
So what is the plan with the detox? You go into a radical deprivation form No alcohol, caffeine, sugar, lollies, red meat, dairy foods, trans fats, wheat products and refined grains, such as white bread and pasta during the period of the detox and then…and then what? WHY?
A healthy body is detoxing all the time. It does this best when it is consistently nourished not when it is starved of some nutrients. Some detox diets lack healthy fats. These deprive your respiratory, cardiovascular system, elimination, reproductive system and your skin of the essential fat soluble vitamins for health. If the detox is low carb it deprives you of your vitamin B complex.
Detox is just another form of SELF ABUSE.
Surely the means to a healthy body which eventually leads to a naturally slim one, is to stop repetitive weighing, detoxing, dieting, comfort eating, overeating, over exercising, under exercising or any other forms of self-punishment.
