What a fabulous concept, a night in the streets of Melbourne filled with music, families and light.
I had friends who went, with two kids under ten and they had a great night. Other people said the crowds were too dense where they were and there was crushing and the children were scared. Perhaps it isn't an event for young children.
My friends arrived in the city early, enjoyed music and a meal at 6pm. They stayed, enjoying the music and light show until midnight.
They saw lots of the illuminations, went to Vladmaster and the Spectacle exhibition at Acmi (both free for the night!) and danced in Federation Square. They thought the vibe was fantastic. With the kids and crowds it was too slow going to walk from one end to the city to the other so only saw about 10% of what was on offer unfortunately! Would have loved to walk down the other side of the river and up to the Library but it was not doable. Having said that, we did not expect to! Will definitely go again next year.
While others reported seeing people drinking alcohol in the street, they saw lots of police, crowd control and also saw ambulance bikes in Flinders St complete with sirens.
